Movie Review: 風雲 II Storm Warriors (2.5*)

i feel better so we caught this movie. the first one was so good (read more here) and we waited TEN YEARS for the sequel and then -.- it was such a dud... quite disappointing. actually i gave it 2* only but added half a * cos aaron kwok looked sizzling hot...

here's why i feel it's disappointing:

1. it's essentially disjoint from part 1...

no links were established so you can totally just watch this on it's own without having watched part 1. other than 風 wind, 雲 cloud and chu chu 楚楚 (they changed the actress from hot shu qi to another also pretty tang yan), the other characters are new.

2. the plot is rather thin.

basically, power-hungry 絕無神 lord godless wants to reign and in order to do so must find some dragon bone (which is some late emperor's vertebrate -.-???). wind and cloud are the heroes who are supposed to save the day when exponent 無名 Nameless failed to do so... in order to increase his power indefinitely over a short span of time, wind turns to the dark side while cloud becomes nameless' disciple.

so the bad guy lord godless is destroyed... his son played by nich tse is quite an extra i think... throughout the show he just looked super buay song only...

and then cos wind turned evil, he fought cloud and the two fight fight fight until cloud managed to draw wind back to the right way by killing his "evil eye"

-.- that's it. unlike part 1 which had interesting subplots and great dialogue, as well as the love triangle between wind, cloud and mercy... the plot lacked depth...

3. i felt the movie was v v draggy and the fight scenes too long and too much slow mo...

they'd pan slowly from left to right focusing on wind's expression, with fringe floating across his face in the breeze... then pan slowly from right to left now zooming in on hot aaron's handsome features and killer look... then one fly from left with sword the other fly from right with sword and criss cross each other in the centre... all done slow mo... zzz they fight fight fight fight fight... 20 mins later, they are still fighting... zzz

i guess the producers are trying to make it look like a comic book which i feel they have succeeded... in comic books, the fight scenes can last many pages... and some of the scenes really had the comic book feel...

4. overdoing the CG

golly... it reminded me of people who just learned how to use powerpoint or keynote and get over-enthu about using ALL the animations in their presentations... a bit of an overkill... everytime someone raised an arm or sword, there'd be kpish kpish kpish... kababom kababom... too kuazhang already la...

haiz... but at least aaron kwok still looked hot as ever...
