After depositing our baggage in the coin lockers at Kii-Katsuura 紀伊勝浦 station (JPY600 each), about 1 hr 20 mins from Shirahama on the JR Kuroshio train, we boarded the public bus to tour the Nachisan 那智山 area. Our first stop was the Nachi falls 那智の滝, supposedly the tallest in Japan. There was a very friendly and helpful old man at the entrance of the falls who showed us the walking route and a place we could go for lunch =)
Then we walked up a long flight of stairs to Kumano Nachi Shrine 熊野那智大社, one of the 3 major shrines on the Kumano kodo 熊野古道, and Sanjyunotou 三重塔 before walking down a very difficult, albeit downwards, Kumano kodo to Daimozaka 大門坂. The steps are very uneven so going downwards may be more difficult than upwards. It took us at least 45 mins to finish the path.
We just missed the 15:06 bus so the next bus was 15:51 and I was really freaking out because if we can’t get a bus back and it starts to get dark, we’d be in deep trouble hahaha but thankfully, the bus came and we got back to Nakanoshima 中の島, our ryokan, in time for a soak in the very scenic rotenburo and a fulfilling dinner =)
